Some thoughts from the winter

Your energy is an undercurrent, always alive no matter how deep the freeze.

Sometimes the winter comes for my creativity. Maybe I should get softer…I know I would love to write more, create more, process more, savor more. When I feel this way and get close to it—to creating—my blood freezes up like I’m standing on the edge of a jagged cliff or as if there is a tarantula slowly crawling between my spirit and the page.

So the instinct is to avoid—as if by looking away, I will be safer. But I know, even if the knowing is very deep below the iceberg, that my spirit will be safest in the cushion of what it means to create.

Your energy is an undercurrent, always alive no matter how deep the freeze. Acknowledging the value of a wintery pause, I wish for you the courage to thaw—to put pen to paper, make this friction that heats up the marrow and the invisible stuff that makes you feel okay, and beyond that, alive—never farther than a breath from beauty. <3

Leesta Vall Sound Recordings

On March 7th of this year, we are heading up to Leesta Vall Sound Recordings in Brooklyn, New York to record a handful of unique direct-to-vinyl singles. If you are interested in purchasing one, the preorders are live! Each vinyl will be lathe-cut as we record a personal message and then play a one-of-a-kind performance of a song of your choosing. I love the way Leesta Vall describes it as like a Polaroid but for music! Check it out and learn more here: https://leestavall.com/products/junipertree

INSPIRATION LATELY

I am currently taking a songwriting workshop through School of Song with Adrianne Lenker. Her thoughtful insights about creativity, intuition, and being receptive to songs have opened me up to writing for the first time in many months. As wintery as the weather is, my inner songwriter feels like it’s springtime.

What has inspired you recently?

BEFORE YOU GO,
A POEM FOR THE ROAD:

Total Lunar Eclipse (January 21, 2019)

In a matchless gradient of color,
our brilliant moon gradually darkens
to embery red against
a crisp
and black
and very cold sky.

It whispers power.

I am presented with my own celestiality,
invited to convene with everything else,
put surely in place…

There I am on the Moon in a shadow.
Here I am on the Earth below.

The dark veil covers
and kills
my apathy—
buries it in the winter-hardened ground.

Electricity meets the feet
underneath me.
My body understands the motion
of the rock she walks.

Deep red warms the blood.
Life that was frozen
begins to flow.
My chest feels full
and breaths connected…

Belonging—leaving—
swelling—thinning,

affected—drawn—
illuminated—shrouded,

death—life—
ending—beginning,

riveted—revived—
entranced—snapped out of it.
